A Hexiang Bead Comes to Life: Leisurely Moments in an Ancient Craft(Part 3)

The Gift of Time – Drying, Aging, and the Slow Philosophy

The kneaded beads must go through hole‑punching, drying, polishing, and stringing before they become wearable Hexiang beads. The most challenging part is waiting.

Piercing and Air‑Drying

While the beads are still soft, a steel needle is used to pierce a hole precisely in the center. Then the beads are placed on bamboo trays and left to dry naturally in a cool, ventilated place. Never in direct sunlight or in an oven – that would make the aroma evaporate and the beads crack.

The drying time depends on the bead size and the humidity. Small beads take about a week; larger ones can take two weeks or even longer. During this time, the ingredients inside slowly blend and ferment, and the scent matures from raw and sharp to mellow and harmonious. Some compare this process to “aging” the beads.

Polishing and Stringing

Once dry, the bead surfaces are a bit rough. Each bead is polished with fine sandpaper or a soft cloth until it takes on a warm, gentle luster. Finally, according to the design, the beads are strung into bracelets, necklaces, or tasseled pendants.

Only then is a Hexiang bead truly finished.

The Slow Philosophy of the Artisan

From ingredient selection to finished bead, the shortest possible time is half a month. For complex formulas or larger beads, two or three months is common.

In our fast‑paced era, this kind of slowness seems out of place. But the artisans say, “Plants have their own nature. You have to go along with it. A bead made in haste has no soul.”

Perhaps that’s the true charm of intangible cultural heritage Hexiang beads – they are not just accessories. They are a stretched‑out moment of time, a breath of plants that you can carry with you wherever you go.
