A 2,000‑year‑old “manual of the human body” and the first pharmacopoeia – still in use today.
If remote antiquity was our ancestors groping in the dark, the Han dynasty was when Chinese medicine first lit a lamp.
The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon, written during the Eastern Han, sounds like the name of a martial arts manual – but it's actually China's oldest systematic work on medical theory. It introduced concepts like yin‑yang, the five elements, and the system of channels and organs. In plain language: the body is a whole, and you can't treat a disease just by looking at its surface.
Then came another masterpiece: the Shennong Materia Medica, China's very first pharmaceutical monograph. It listed 365 drugs, created the principles of “four natures and five flavors” and “monarch, minister, assistant, and guide” for combining herbs. What does that mean? Just like an emperor with his courtiers – the monarch herb leads the attack, the minister assists, the assistant moderates, and the guide directs. This framework has been used for two thousand years and is still alive in TCM prescriptions today.
But the person who truly moved TCM from theory to clinical practice was Zhang Zhongjing.
His Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases pioneered “pattern differentiation and treatment” – not just treating the head when the head hurts, but tailoring the prescription to each person's specific condition. His formulas, like Cinnamon Twig Decoction and Ephedra Decoction, are still used for colds. It's said that when Hua Tuo – another legendary physician – read the book, he couldn't help but exclaim, “This is a book that truly saves lives!”
Zhang Zhongjing didn't just leave behind medical texts. He also gave us a beloved food.
According to legend, he was returning home from office in Changsha during winter when he saw poor villagers with ears frostbitten and rotting. So he set up a shelter, made a filling of mutton and warming herbs, wrapped it in dough shaped like little ears, boiled them, and handed them out. People ate them from the winter solstice to New Year's Eve – their frostbite healed, and their bodies grew warm.
That was the origin of dumplings (jiaozi).
Next time you bite into a dumpling, think about this: inside that little wrapper is the compassion of a “medical saint.”
