A Hexiang Bead Comes to Life: Leisurely Moments in an Ancient Craft(Part 1)

The Soul of a Hexiang Bead – Selecting and Processing the Ingredients

In the last article, we talked about Hexiang beads as “wearable Chinese medicine.” So how is such a tiny bead actually made?

Unlike plastic beads mass-produced on an assembly line, each intangible cultural heritage Hexiang bead goes through at least fifteen handcrafted steps. Miss one step, and the aroma isn’t right. Rush one day, and the bead will crack.

Selecting Ingredients – As Precise as Writing a Prescription

Most of the raw materials for Hexiang beads are Chinese medicinal herbs. But you can’t just grab a random handful.

A good Hexiang bead starts with an exquisite incense formula. The artisans follow the ancient principle of “ruler, minister, assistant, and envoy” – just like a traditional Chinese medicine doctor composing a prescription:

  • Ruler (君料): The dominant fragrance, such as agarwood or sandalwood – the largest portion.

  • Minister (臣料): Supports the ruler and adds layers – for example, rosewood (Dalbergia) and spikenard.

  • Assistant (佐料): Balances the medicinal properties – such as licorice root and angelica, to reduce harshness.

  • Envoy (使料): Guides the release of the aroma – traditionally musk (now mostly artificial musk) or borneol camphor.

For example, a classic “calming” Hexiang bead formula uses agarwood as the ruler, mimosa flower and arborvitae seed as ministers, a small amount of frankincense as assistant, and borneol camphor as envoy. This follows the same logic of herbal pairing found in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing (the ancient Chinese classic on herbal medicine) – only this time, the medicinal effects are delivered not through the stomach, but through smell and skin absorption.

Processing the Herbs – Taming the “Wildness”

Raw medicinal herbs cannot be used directly. Some need to be stir-fried (like atractylodes), some soaked in wine (like rhubarb), and some mixed with honey and roasted (like astragalus). The goal is to remove harshness, enhance fragrance, reduce toxicity, and harmonize the flavors.

Take sandalwood, for instance. If ground directly, it has a strong “fire energy” that may leave your mouth dry after prolonged smelling. The traditional method is to soak it in green tea overnight, then slowly stir-fry it over a gentle flame. This makes the woody scent warm and lasting. This step depends entirely on experience – you can’t rush it.

The right ingredients, properly processed – that’s the soul of a Hexiang bead. Next, these herbs will be ground, mixed, and shaped by hand.
